When people get old they think they can still do everything they could do when they were young. Physically, it is impossible, but their mind is determined they still can. This delusion is probably because they do not want to face the fact that they are getting old and will have to retire from strenuous activities. Ulysses does not want to give up either; he wants to go on more adventurous journeys and “drink life to the lees.” He vows to take in everything good in life and savor it.
