Ulysses
by Courtney
Odysseus is a name that is well known, one that is often associated
with "The Odyssey". It is a term that has come to mean
a adventure or journey. The story of Odysseus is a very important and
meaningful tale that shows the importance of life and life’s
journey. The ancient story of Odysseus may be the origin of the phrase,
"live your life to the fullest". Many students believe in
this concept especially when they are young and in the prime of life.
That is why
it is important to care about an old Greek guy, and also to take in
the thoughts of a Victorian poem about him. "To strive, to seek,
to find, and not to yield," a famous quotation from the dramatic
monologue "Ulysses" by Alfred Tennyson, captures Odysseus’s
philosophy of life. Even though Ulysses is now an old man he does not
see himself as old at heart. Many older people in today’s society
desire, like Ulysses, to go on one last adventure before death. Only
then can life be lived to the fullest, and drunk "to the lees".
It is very important, then, for students and people of all ages to
take Odysseus’s thoughts to heart and relate to the view of life
expressed in the poem "Ulysses".
