By: Carlee and Jacqueline One afternoon our class went on an energetic walk. We walked down the grassy hill to the Ardiel House. The class stayed outside and played games as we went in to explore the house. When we walked in we saw a lot of old fashioned stuff like a clock with a feather for a second hand and a brass bicycle that held candles of all different colors. We asked questions of the owners. This was their house, they live upstairs but the downstairs is a gift store. To get to the upstairs, there were lots of old wooden steps. The gift store downstairs smelled very sweet because there were candles placed on different shelves and counters. We noticed that there was a big grate in the middle of the floor. It was blowing out hot air. It warmed us up but smelled a little dusty. The owners told us that the air came from a new furnace not the old fashioned fireplace in the corner under the chimney. My eyes caught the sight of a cute bottle holder. It was in the shape of an old fashioned car. I bent down to feel the wooden floor. It was rough and bumpy. We looked out the dusty window, made out of glass. In the past, the windows in the Ardiel House had wooden shudders. Obviously this feature of the house had changed. Looking through the window, we could see the rest of our class waiting for us. Our teacher came into the house to get us. We did not want to leave but knew it was time. Once we were outside, we noticed the big porch on the front of the house. It was made from wood and painted a different color than the rest of the house. We also noticed that there were two separate staircases that came down the sides of the front porch. The house still seemed old but with many new, interesting things to let us see both the old and the new of the Ardiel House in Okotoks. |
