Welcome To The General Store
GENERAL STORE IN THE
PRESENT
GENERAL STORE IN THE
FUTURE

Following are the reflections of two students from the 2/3 classrooms at Dr. Morris Gibson Elementary school after visiting the General Store (now called the Old Country Store) and envisioning it in the past:

The General Store is a wonderful place for buying seeds, clothing such as bonnets, shirts and pants and other useful things. When I go there, the noises I hear are of money jingling on the countertops. I see people talking. They talk about the nice things that they see in the store. It smells very  sweet like candles and candy. The smells are of vanilla, strawberries, blueberries and peppermint. They make my stomach rumble.

The store was constructed in 1906. I have been in it many times. I like it a lot. It looks squished like a tomato when

you are in front of it. Living in the pioneer days, the store is very useful for everyone. You can get soap and tools and some kinds of food there. The walls downstairs are made of sandstone. When I touch it, it feels bumpy and rough. The store is in Okotoks, Alberta on mainstreet.

I think this store is very, very old because the paint has turned a dull, dreary color and is coming off the bricks in huge, pointed chunks. The windows are dirty and cracked, probably from the wind that blows through town. It has antique stuff inside. Vases, cups and lamps look old and rusty. The bricks are poky. They all have very sharp ends. If you accidentally touched one, you could cut yourself. It is different from now because the porch is not there any  more. It was old. Boards were missing and the wood smelled sweaty. It was almost as if the porch would have fallen to the ground at any moment. I wish I could work there because I think it would be fun. I would sell everything the town needed. The General stores floor is very creaky, the door is as well. It smells very old and sweaty. When you go downstairs you can hear creaks from the people moving around upstairs.  The walls feel very bumpy and sharp. The General store was made 94 years ago in 1906.

The walls downstairs are made out of sandstone. They look as if they are dirty. The original floor is still on as well. It is hardwood and feels rough and worn from all the people who have walked on it. The ceiling in the basement is very old. Now it is called the Old County Store. The General store is a fantastic place.
