WELCOME TO THE RENAISSANCE

Change is inevitable, especially for a civilization, which virtually remained the same for 800 - 900 years.

Three significant changes brought a close to the Middle Ages and their preoccupation with saving souls and avoiding temptation.  These changes are:

a renewed interest in the past

an explosion of information and

a central interest of self versus others

The Renaissance, meaning "rebirth" was a time of great creativity.  There was a revival of interest in the classical works of Greece and Rome, which inscribed a new way of looking at the world.
The artists of the Renaissance rediscovered Greek artists and their understanding of perspective and the illusion of space and distance.  Our classes have explored one-point perspective and the role of geometry and convergent lines.

Individuals began to explore people's individuality and to educate themselves. Gutenberg's printing press was probably

one of the most dramatic developments to affect the Renaissance world.  Books were available to a wide audience.

As a 4/5 student, we have studied "the arts" as a way of viewing this rebirth.  We have examined and studied the Renaissance through many of the great artists and the paintings they created.  Through an inquiry method we have examined change and the things that cause change.  This inquiry has led us to ask:

ARE WE IN THE MIDST OF ANOTHER RENAISSANCE?
