Journal #1
It is another nice spring day and the sun is shining through the hole in the
top of my wigwam. Today I have to take my boy on a hunting trip so I can teach
him to trap and hunt. He needs to know how to do this so when he gets older
he can provide the tribe and his family with food. My daughter needs to spend
time with the village woman. There she will learn to sew, prepare hides and
preserve food and meat to last the winter. She also needs to learn to build
wigwams so the tribe will not be homeless. My youngest must spend time listening
to the village Elders so that he learns our history and the stories of who we
are. This also helps to keep the history of our people alive and the stories
being passed onto the next generations. It also helps in teaching our young
about how our village is run.
Journal #2
It is a mid summer day and I am on a hunting trip to get some food for the
tribe. On the edge of the water I can see a huge mass that sails like a canoe.
I walk closer to get a better look. There are many white people in the huge
canoe and we have never seen any thing like this before. I do not know what
is to come of this but I have a bad feeling.
Journal #3
The white men are here but have not made contact yet. We don't know what to
do about them. Some of our tribe members want to make friends and some want
to send them back to where they came from. I am extremely puzzled. They are
getting closer and closer each day and we are going to have to make a decision
soon.
Journal #4
The white people have made contact with us and are wanting to trade different goods with us. They really seem to want furs. In return for our furs we get metal guns and pans. Many of the tribe members are impressed with the guns and our woman are very happy to have these metal pots to cook in. These people are in need of help in order to survive the winter. If we don't help them they will not live to see the spring. We gave them food such as dried squash, pumpkin, peas, and meat. I am still not sure that helping them is what we should do.
Journal #5
The tribe and I are not happy with how the white people are trying to force their way of life upon us. We have discovered that the white men are very wasteful and have no respect for the animals or the land. The white men are killing animals, taking only what they need, and leaving the rest behind to rot. They only want the furs. They are trying to change our beliefs to their Christianity. I fear that our way of life has been changed forever.
