Riverrun - The DebateHorseshoe Debate: Natural Evolution or Genocide?ResearchYou need to prepare to take a position on the following debate topic: "The extinction of the Beothuk was a result of natural evolution, not genocide." In order to take and defend a position on the topic you will need to do some background research. Begin by gathering evidence, examples, quotations etc. from the various online resources that have been provided for you. Copy and paste these details into a word document as well as the URL of the web pages where you found your information. Submit a copy of your research notes into the appropriate folder labelled YourSurname_DebateResearch. (Use your Group Folder --> Horseshoe Debate --> Debate Research) (Due Apr. 30)Initial Draft of Opening SpeechUse your research notes to write an opening speech outlining your position on the topic. Your position should be developed in a convincing manner. Provide an introduction to your position that is engaging and reasons that are compelling and convincing. Select the strongest bits of evidence from your research that you can find. Use language that is convincing and persuasive. Submit your initial draft of your opening speech to the teacher's drop box. (Due May 2)Debate PreparationUse the scoring rubric to assess the content of your debate speech. Make any needed revisions. Print a hard copy of your speech to use for rehearsing your delivery. Once you feel confident in delivering your opening speech you need to prepare for the open debate. Begin by creating a chart of arguments for and against the case of the Beothuks being an example of a genocide. List all of the evidence that you can in support of your position and anticipate what arguments and evidence the opposition will use against you. Think about how you will address these arguments if they arise during the debate. Bring your chart and a good copy of your opening speech to the debate - check the calendar to see when you are scheduled to debate against members of your team. Self AssessmentUse the criteria in the scoring rubric to prepare a written self assessment of your debate performance. Submit the final draft of your opening speech and the self assessment to the teacher's drop box. (Due May 6)
